About the Lakes

Before the Patterson Lakes residential waterway estate was developed, the land between the Patterson River and Wells Road was degraded farmland used mostly for stock grazing.

The land was part of the Carrum Carrum Swamp with some original vegetation and wetlands, but most of the swamp had been drained in the late 1800s for farming.

Existing high levees built along the Patterson River protected this low-lying land from large floods. It is interesting to note that the Patterson River is a man-made channel constructed in 1879 to carry water from Dandenong Creek to Port Phillip Bay.

In the early 1970s, the Patterson Lakes Partnership and others began constructing the lakes and tidal waterways system.

The development was approved by the local councils of the day on the condition that the lakes and waterways would remain under the control and management of a waterway authority.

Today, Patterson Lakes is essentially fully developed and provides an environment and a range of residential lifestyles not found elsewhere in Melbourne.
